Web Site Hosting

What is hosting?

"Hosting" is the practise of storing and serving the web pages for the anyone on the internet to access. In order for people to access your web pages, they must reside on a computer that is constantly connected to the internet. You may already have the ability to "host" web pages with your current Internet Service Provider (ISP). ISPs offer varying degrees of hosting ability - most are very simple and not capable of advanced features.

"Hosting" also determines the Uniform Resource Locator (URL) that makes your pages accessible. The URL is your web "address" that always starts with "http://www" and is followed by the a unique string of characters that point to the location of your pages on the internet.

What options do I have?

Options for hosting are:
  • Your own domain name. This could be "www.your_name.com" or "www.your_company_name.com". Domain names must be registered with a Domain Registration service. AaltoNET can help you to determine if the domain of your choice is still available, as well as register it for you. Domain registration fees are currently as low as $40 (Canadian) per year. The advantage of this solution is that your URL is short and easy to remember; both for you and your potential online customers. This solution requires a hosting solution that will accommodate "domain name service" (DNS).

  • Sub-domain hosting. This is a more cost effective option that would allow you a URL such as "http://www.aaltonet.com/yourname" or "http://www.aaltonet.com/your_company_name".

  • Personal Home Page hosting. This is the option that most ISPs provide to their residential internet customers. It is not very flexible, in that you have little or no choice in what the URL will look like. This has the added disadvantage of being an excessively long URL that is often difficult to remember. An example would be "http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/your_account_name"

Can I change my host?

Generally, you can change your host at any time, usually at a nominal cost. It is highly recommended, however, that you attempt to "get it right" the first time. If your pages are constantly moving around the Internet from one hosting solution to another, it is difficult for online search engines to properly catalogue and identify your site to potential customers and clients who may be searching for your product and/or service. We would be happy to discuss and elaborate on the different hosting solutions with you. Once you fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of each, you will be in a better position to make an educated and balanced decision based upon your needs and budget.
